While commentating for the Asia Cup, Gautam Gambhi said something that shocked fans. He said that whoever finishes the match is the match-winner. Hearing this statement, many fans were amused. 

“Jo match ko khatam karta hai, wohi match jeetata hai (Whoever finishes the match wins the match.)” In the past, Gambhir had slammed the media plenty of times for making it look like Mahendra Singh Dhoni had single handedly won India the 2011 ODI World Cup Finals. Gambhir had constantly said that the media should recognise the contributions of all players in that World Cup instead of always crediting MS Dhoni.

Fans found this statement hilarious as Dhoni had hit the winning runs of the 2011 ODI World Cup finals. Gambhir had scored 97 off 122, but majority of the fans celebrated Dhoni’s 91 due to him finishing the match. The same occurred when Gambhir scored an important half century in the finals of the 2007 T20I World Cup. Fans lauded his innings, but a lot of fans credited Dhoni for the win as he was the captain.

Gambhir was then dropped from all formats in the year 2012 after the rise of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit being promoted as an opener. Gambhir retired from all formats of cricket in 2018 and is currently a Member of the Lok Sabha. He also works as a commentator.

After Gautam Gambhir said this, many fans on X started to call out the hypocrisy. They called Gambhir jealous and called out his inability to see the irony of his statement. Many fans asked why was Gambhir complaining all this time when he believes the finisher is the match-winner. Many fans made fun of Gambhir for his lack of awareness, hypocrisy and obsession with the situation.
