England were in trouble, losing their first five wickets in the first session of the Test, with Akash Deep running through the top order. But Root and Ben Foakes stood tall, preserving their wickets in the afternoon session and having a stand of 113 runs. India were unable to pick up a wicket throughout the session, and managed to pick up only two more wickets by the end of the day.
Root built a century partnership with Ollie Robinson, who also scored a fifty. Luckily for India, Ravindra Jadeja finished the England innings by picking up the last three wickets. Root was the only batter to not get out, scoring 122* off 274, with a strike rate of 44.52.
