India batter Tilak Varma slammed his first fifty in T20Is during the second T20I match against West Indies at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Sunday (August 6). Varma saved India’s innings when wickets kept falling at regular intervals.
This made him the second youngest batter after India captain Rohit Sharma to score a half-century for India. Rohit achieved this feat when he was 20 years and 143 days old, while Varma reached the landmark at 20 years and 271 days old.
Varma was the only one who shouldered the responsibility to take India to a respectable total and if it wasn’t for him, India, who were already fumbling, wouldn’t have scored 152 in their 20 overs. He scored 51 runs from 41 balls under pressure with five boundaries and a six at a strike rate of 124.39.
However, after just scoring his maiden T20I, Varma went for a pull shot in the 16th over bowled by Akeal Hosein. But he did not time the shot well and Obed McCoy grabbed the catch to end the brilliant innings.
