India pacer Mohammed Siraj reached the top of the latest ICC ODI Rankings for bowlers. This happened after his heroic spell of 6/21 in the final of the 2023 Asia Cup match against Sri Lanka. Siraj leapfrogged from the ninth position to the top one to become the No. 1 bowler in the 50-over format.
This is the second time Siraj reached the top position this year. He stood atop the Rankings for a while earlier this year but couldn’t stay there for a long time as he soon got demoted even from the top five.
In the final against Sri Lanks, Siraj delivered a dream spell as he even grabbed four wickets in a single over before the Powerplay. His heroic spell helped India bundle out Dasun Shanaka and Co. got just 50 runs. Later, India chased down the target to win the match by 10 wickets to get crowned the 2023 Asia Cup champions. Siraj later collected the Player of the Match award but donated the prize money to the groundsmen.
Fans react to Mohammed Siraj’s reclaiming top position in ODI Rankings
Mohammed Siraj ended the 2023 Asia Cup tournament with 10 wickets from five matches. Six of his wickets came in the final against Sri Lanka.
Overall, this year, Siraj has played 13 ODI matches from which he bagged 29 wickets at an economy of 4.62. He stands sixth on the points table of most wicket-takers in ODIs in 2023.
It’s also worth mentioning that India’s Shubman Gill remained second on the ODI batters’ Rankings. However, he closes on dethroning Pakistan’s Babar Azam from the top. Gill has scored more than 1,000 runs this year in the fifty-over format. He also emerged as the highest run-getter in the 2023 Asia Cup. In 17 innings, he scored 1,025 runs at a strike rate of 103.32.
