Former India captain and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly is all set to replace Ricky Ponting as the Delhi Capitals Head Coach from the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). After a horrible end to the IPL 2023 campaign, the franchise owners looked dissatisfied with Ponting’s work and hence are mulling to hand the responsibilities to Ganguly. 

The former India skipper is already a part of the Delhi Capitals setup. Sourav Ganguly joined DC as the Director of Cricket at the start of IPL 2023 and was expected to help Ponting in overlooking things. However, as it panned out, DC finished last in the points table with only five wins in fourteen matches.

This shambolic performance did not go unnoticed by the owners and Ponting had to face the scrutiny. Now, as it stands, the Australian is all set to lose his job to Sourav Ganguly. According to a report in Sangbad Pratidin, Sourav Ganguly will be given the responsibility to manage everything from coaching to the mentorship of Delhi Capitals from IPL 2024.

Decision draws mixed reactions from fans

This decision from the DC owners to hand the Head Coach baton to Sourav Ganguly from Ricky Ponting drew mixed reactions from the fans. While a few felt that this will change things for DC, a few looked disappointed with the move.

It will be interesting to see if DC go ahead with Sourav Ganguly as the Head Coach next season. With the kind of performance DC put up in IPL 2023, the fans will hope for a change in their fortunes with a change in support staff. Rishabh Pant‘s return to the helm of affairs will also be a positive for DC in IPL 2024.
