The Ashes is called the best Test bilateral for some reason. While the players fight nothing less than a battle on the field, the fans too get involved and make things interesting.
The crowd in England can get nasty and a testament to this statement was on display during Day 4 of the 1st Ashes Test when the spectators started sledging Steve Smith while the Australian batter was fielding near the boundary ropes.
The crowd took a dig at Smith for his involvement in the ‘sandpaper gate’ scandal in 2018 and mocked the former Australia captain over the visuals of him crying on live TV. This is not the first time Smith has been teased by the crowd over this ball-tampering saga. In the 2019 Ashes as well as in the 2019 ODI World Cup, Smith was targeted by the local fans.
The video of the crowd singing “Cried on Tele” for Smith was shared by England’s Barmy Army on social media. And as expected, it blew up the internet in no time.
Twitter left divided over the fairness of the act against Steve Smith
With the video going viral on social media, reactions were bound to come and they came in large numbers. Interestingly, there was not one opinion about this act from the England fans. While a few fans declared the act fair saying such things make Test cricket interesting, a section of fans want Smith to show the crowd its level.

It will be interesting to see if Steve Smith replies to the English crowd with a match-winning knock in the second innings or not. As of now, England have set a 282-run target for Australia to win the 1st Ashes Test.
