A fire broke out at the iconic Eden Gardens on the night of 10th August. The sixty-five-thousand-seater stadium is currently undergoing renovations for the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup. Two fire brigades arrived to ensure the fire didn’t cause more damage to the stadium. Eden Gardens is all set to host one of the two semifinals of the World Cup.
Now, just a few days after the ICC inspected the stadium, a short circuit caused a fire inside the dressing room. Although there wasn’t much damage, the fire did burn down all the players’ belongings which were present in the dressing room.
Apart from the semifinals, Eden Gardens is set to host five games during the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup, including India’s clash against South Africa. CAB Joint Secretary Debabrata Ganguly assured that there would be an investigation into what caused the fire to break out.
Workers noticed the fire and instantly contacted the fire department, which helped in suppressing the fire right away. Although the ICC didn’t find any problems at first, this fire will bring up the issue of safety in the future. Each stadium must be renovated by the ICC’s deadline of 15th September. There will be another inspection in the month of September as well.
Stadiums across India undergo renovations for the 2023 ODI World Cup
The BCCI has spent over Rs. 500 Crores on renovating and upgrading all ten stadiums in preparations for the World Cup. Each stadium has had Rs. 50 Crores sanctioned for this.
The Eden Gardens was getting a new dressing room as part of these renovations. New pitches are being put in Ekana Stadium in Lucknow and MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The Chepauk Stadium has new LED lights installed as well, along with Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, meanwhile, had a new drainage system installed.
Now the Cricket Association of Bengal will do its best to ensure that there aren’t any more incidents like this, especially as the World Cup is barely two months away.
