“What an unreal batting & bowling”- First Glenn Phillips’ ton then Trent Boult’s four-fer fire the Kiwis to thrash Sri Lanka

Glenn Phillips and Trent Boult
Trent Boult has been phenomenal with the ball. He scalped three wickets in the powerplay to give a perfect thrashing of the Sri Lankan batters to guide New Zealand to a 65-run victory at the SCG on Saturday [October 29].
Batting first, the Kwis’ state was rather looking like the Lankans had all the momentum till Glenn Phillips outclassed Lankans’ bowling attacks with a perfect century. He smashed 64 balls to score 104 runs with 10 boundaries and four maximums at a brilliant strike rate of 162.50. He was the lone warrior as other batters faltered badly; with this ton, the Kiwis posted 167/7 in their full 20 overs.
When Sri Lanka walked out to bat, Tim Southee first sent back opener Pathum Nissanka on duck in the very first over. Kusal Mendis might have smashed two back-to-back half-centuries in their previous matches, but he fumbled while facing Boult in the second over.
In that same over, Dhananjaya de Silva was the next batter to walk back on the duck courtesy of Boult again. Charith Asalanka then departed in the fourth over bowled by Boult.
Only Bhanuka Rajapaksa and skipper Dasun Shanaka tried to revive the Lankans’ innings but their efforts didn’t help much. Rajapaksa scored 34 runs off 22 balls with three fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 154.55 before Lockie Ferguson got rid of him in the 10th over. Ferguson bowled a full one, making Rajapaksa go straight over the mid-off fielder but mistimed his shot and Kane Williamson grabbed a comfortable catch.
Shanaka became a victim of Boult in the 17th over. Boult delivered a short ball in line with the stumps and Shanaka wanted to pull it but did not connect well. The ball traveled into the hands of Daryl Mitchell at deep square leg.
After Ish Sodhi dismissed Lahiru Kumara in the last over, the Kiwis won the match by 65 runs, got another two points, and now they top the table in Group 1 with five points in their three matches.
Meanwhile, Boult scalped four wickets and conceded just 13 runs in his full four overs at a brilliant strike rate of 3.25. Mitchell Santer and Sodhi bagged two each, while Southee and Ferguson could get one wicket each.
