Caribbean Premier League (CPL) operations director Micheal Hall announced quite a few rule changes ahead of the 2023 edition of the tournament. These changes included severe penalties for bowling as well as batting teams for wasting time. While there will be five penalty runs for the batting team if they waste time, bowling teams will be severely punished if they fail to maintain the over rate

The new rule introduced says that if the bowling is behind the required over rate at the start of the 18th over, they will have to keep five fielders inside the 30-yard circle. If they fall behind the over rate at the start of the 19th over, six fielders will have to be inside the circle.

And if the bowling team falls behind the over rate at the start of the final over, there will be a red card issue and the captain will have to send one of its players off the field and will have to bowl with six fielders inside the circle.

“We have been disappointed that our T20 games have been getting longer and longer each year, and we want to do what we can to arrest this trend,” Michael Hall said while announcing the rule change.

The Caribbean Premier League also allows 85 minutes to complete one inning. While there were no such severe penalties in the previous editions of the tournament, the organizers are in no mood to cut slack this time around.

“Over rates will be monitored by the third umpire and communicated to the captains via on-field umpires at the end of every over, as well as to the crowd and TV audience, with graphics showing how far they are behind (or ahead of) the over rate,” the statement from CPL said.

It is worth mentioning that the bowling team has to complete the 17th over by 72 minutes and 15 seconds, the 18th by 76 minutes and 30 seconds, and the 19th by 80 minutes and 45 seconds, before the last over ends within 85 minutes. Meanwhile, the batting team will be slapped with a five-run penalty if they waste time even after a warning. CPL 2023 kicks off on 17 August. There will be a women’s edition as well which kicks off on 31 August.
