The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently put out an advertisement for the vacant Chief Selector’s post on the Selection Committee and if reports are to be believed, former India pacer Ajit Agarkar has applied for the post. In fact, Agarkar, who has served as the Chief Selector at the domestic level (for Mumbai) is the frontrunner to take up the position.

The former India all-rounder who has represented the country in 26 Tests and 191 ODIs also gave up his job with Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals to be eligible for the Chairman of Selectors role. DC announced Agarkar’s and Shane Watson’s departure on Thursday.

Now, it is being reported that Agarkar is almost confirmed to become the new BCCI Chief Selector. “Former India bowler Ajit Agarkar is the frontrunner to be the next India men’s chairman of selectors after applying to the vacant spot in the selection committee,” reported ESPNCricinfo.

Reports have also emerged that BCCI is also set to increase the package for the Chief Selector from 1 CPA (crore per annum). Quite a few media reports had claimed that the low package offered by BCCI made it hard for big names to apply for the post and hence the board has decided to increase the pay scale.

It is worth mentioning that there has been a lot of chatter about BCCI not having a good Chief Selector which, according to fans, has played a part in India’s failure to win an ICC title in the last ten years. These claims hold true to some extent as there have been several selection blunders including Ajinkya Rahane’s promotion as Test vice-captain.

It is believed that not having a big name across the table has resulted in these selection blunders from the BCCI Selection Committee. Now, with Ajit Agarkar joining the panel as the Chief Selector, the Selection Committee will have a strong opposition in case there are differences with the team management.
