Following India’s lackluster performance in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia, there was uproar on social media and ex-cricketers started questioning India’s tactics. One of India’s decisions was heavily criticized from the very first day. Because of the overcast condition at The Oval, India dropped No. 1 Test spinner Ravichandran Ashwin from the XI and included an extra seamer.
Ashwin was disheartened by this WTC snub. At the same time, his interview answers also created quite a buzz on social media. Ashwin said players in Indian cricket have become just colleagues in modern times. He feels due to the cut-throat competition, instead of being friends, the players have got busy to outdo the other players.
But former India player and now a cricket pundit Aakash Chopra, referred to the Australians in the 90s to prove that though the Aussie members were not on friendly terms, they still were nearly undefeatable in international cricket.
“They (Australian team members) didn’t really like each other as much, which is ok. But as soon as they crossed the boundary, they were unstoppable. It was almost impossible to defeat them,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
Aakash Chopra feels there should be healthy competition between players
Talking about the same topic, Aakash Chopra feels in a team, the players are not like family members. He pointed out that it generally is not the case where teams with a family-like atmosphere win more matches.
Chopra recalled his playing days when the team atmosphere in domestic cricket, though, was not unfriendly, but players were involved in healthy competition. Chopra feels teams like Delhi and Rajasthan were successful in Ranji Trophy despite not having such an atmosphere as Ravichandran Ashwin says is lacking in the dressing room.
Meanwhile, Ashwin was backed for the overseas West Indies series, and in the first Test itself, the veteran off-spinner helped India wrap up the match quickly. He finished with 12 wickets, helping India win the match by an innings and 141 runs.
