Former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi died at 77 after a prolonged illness on Monday (October 23). He is survived by his wife Anju, daughter Neha, and son Angad.
Bedi was India’s left-arm spinner who was among those who revolutionized the art of spin in India. He featured in 67 Tests, and 10 ODIs, scalping 266 and seven wickets respectively.
In domestic cricket, the Amritsar-born spinner played for the Delhi team. He also led Delhi to their first two Ranji Trophy crowns in 1978-79 and 1979-80. The late spinner also featured in the English County cricket and played for the Northamptonshire in 102 matches, picking up 434 wickets (most by an Indian).
After retirement, he started working as a coach and commentator. He was also the manager of the Indian team in 1990. As a coach of the Punjab in the domestic circuit, he guided the team to its only Ranji Trophy victory (1992-93). He was one of those critics who did not mince words while giving opinions.
