Shubman Gill has evolved as a batter and has been taking the cricket world by storm. The 23-year-old recently finished IPL 2023 as the highest run scorer with 890 runs from 17 matches. Gill now has the record for second-most runs in a single IPL season, after Virat Kohli (who scored 973 runs in IPL 2016). The Gujarat Titans batter also scored three centuries on his way to becoming the Orange Cup winner in IPL 2023.

Gill scoring centuries for fun attracted a lot of praise for him from all corners including Pakistan cricket. Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has also heaped praise on Gill for his stupendous batting in IPL 2023. Akram also took a dig at the Kolkata Knight Riders’ management for not recognizing the potential in Gill and letting go of the batter ahead of IPL 2033 mega auction.

Notably, KKR retained Venkatesh Iyer, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy ahead of IPL 2022 and this move seems to have cost them dearly as the team has been struggling to find a stable opening pair since. Pointing to these facts, Akram has said that KKR should not have let go of Gill at any cost.

The former Pakistan skipper claimed that Shubman Gill is capable of not just winning games but tournaments and KKR clearly missed seeing this. “His basics are correct,” said Akram in a chat on Sportskeeda while speaking on Gill’s performances. “I don’t know how his previous team (Kolkata Knight Riders) released him, not realising his potential.”

“Not realising that he can be the future captain. Not just in franchise cricket but eventually for India too. They didn’t realise that this guy can win them tournaments, not just games,” said the former Pakistan captain.
