Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Head Coach Daniel Vettori has replaced Brian Lara as Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Head Coach, the IPL franchise announced on Monday (7 August). Lara departs after Hyderabad finished in the last position in the points table in IPL 2023. The West Indies legend was handed the responsibility before IPL 2023 but he failed to deliver.
Now, Vettori, who has ample experience coaching in IPL (as he coached RCB from 2014 to 2018) as well as on the International stage (Daniel Vettori was Australia’s assistant coach recently) has taken over the job. This is SRH’s fourth change in Head Coach in six years. Before Lara, SRH had Trevor Bayliss and Tom Moody at the helm of affairs.
Daniel Vettori is currently with Birmingham Phoenix at The Hundred (Men’s) as their Head Coach. Vettori has previously worked with the Bangladesh national cricket team as a spin consultant. His coaching resume also includes head coaching stints with Barbados Royals in the CPL, Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash, and Middlesex in the Vitality Blast.
How has Daniel Vettori fared as a Head Coach?
The former Kiwi all-rounder has a decent amount of experience in coaching. As already mentioned, Daniel Vettori coached RCB for five seasons wherein he managed to take the team to playoffs twice, in 2015 and 2016. RCB even made it to the finals in 2016 but lost to SRH. At The Hundred, with Birmingham Phoenix, Vettori has done a decent job. Also, Daniel Vettori’s Barbados Royals did make it to the finals of CPL 2022.
Now, it is to be seen how Vettori revives SRH who have been down and out since the last couple of seasons. The 2016 champions are struggling with their management. While Aiden Markram coming on board has solved a few problems for SRH, a sound head to guide Markram was the need of the hour and Daniel Vettori could perfectly fit in.
The former New Zealand captain will also look to compete well with the likes of Justin Langer, Stephen Fleming, Andy Flower, Mahela Jayawardene, and others when IPL 2024 takes centerstage next year.
