When the IPL was announced, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced eight franchises and put them up for sale. One of those franchises was of the city of Bangalore, which a local businessman, Vijay Mallya, purchased.
Vijay Mallya purchased the Bangalore franchise for $111.6 million, the 2nd most expensive franchise after Mumbai Indians, which was purchased by Mukesh Ambani. He named it Royal Challengers Bangalore. It was named after a liquor brand owned by Mallya’s United Breweries.
He owned it till 2016 as he turned bankrupt. He was termed as a fugitive, as he ran away from India to the United Kingdom. He then sold it to United Spirits. Despite selling the team, he is still very passionate about his former franchise.
As RCB’s women’s team clinched the 2024 WPL title, Mallya tweeted out to congratulate them. He further wished that the RCB men’s team wins the IPL, hoping for a double.
