India have never won a Test series in South Africa, and they will have to wait for another time because they lost the first Test of the two-match Test series and are playing for a draw in Cape Town. It’s important to mention that at the Newlands Cricket Ground, India have never won a Test match.
India were hopeful of pulling off an incredible victory when they skittled out the hosts for 55 runs in the first innings on the back of Mohammed Siraj’s six-wicket haul. But before India could take advantage of the bowling, Lungi Ngidi ran through the batting line-up.
India were slowly heading toward a decent first innings total with Virat Kohli batting in the middle. After Shreyas Iyer was sent packing for a duck by Nandre Burger, KL Rahul joined Kohli and scored eight runs from 33 balls.
Ngidi came in the 34th over and on his very first ball, he dismissed Rahul. India had lost five wickets for 153 runs then. Soon Langidi bagged two more wickets in that same over: first he dismissed Ravindra Jadeja on the third delivery for a duck, then completed a three-wicket maiden over by dismissing Jasprit Bumrah for a duck.
Before anyone could grasp what was happening, Kohli became Kagiso Rabada‘s wicket for the second time in the series, losing his wicket for 46 runs from 59 balls in the 35th over. He was the highest scorer for India. The last two wickets fell off a run-out (of Mohammed Siraj) and Rabada’s dismissal of Prasidh Krishna in the 35th over itself and India, from 153/4, were at 153/10.
