Pakistan looked pretty well set in the first innings against India, scoring 155/2 in 29.3 overs. On a dead pitch, India were struggling to pick up wickets, that was until Mohammed Siraj was reintroduced in the bowling attack. Siraj was being played with ease until he bowled Babar Azam. This led to a massive batting collapse by the Pakistan batting order.

Two overs after Babar Azam’s dismissal, Kuldeep Yadav struck twice in the same over as he dismissed Saud Shakeel and Iftikhar Ahmed in a span of 4 balls. Jasprit Bumrah was then brought in by captain Rohit Sharma and on his 4th ball sent Mohammad Rizwan back to the dressing room with a brilliant off cutter. Bumrah didn’t stop with his carnage. In his next over he dismissed Shadab Khan with a beautiful delivery.

Hasan Ali and Mohammad Nawaz tried rebuilding the innings but failed as Nawaz gave catching practice to Bumrah at mid-off in Hardik Pandya’s over. Ravindra Jadeja got Hasan Ali in the very next over and dismissed the last Pakistan batter, Haris Rauf, a couple of overs later.

From 155-2 to 191 all out, Pakistan’s middle and lower order failed to perform on a dead pitch as the Indian bowlers hunted for a wicket every ball. India picked up the last 8 wickets in a span of just 12 overs, with five bowlers picking up two wickets each. In a span of 80 balls, Pakistan managed to score 36/8 only. From scoring the biggest 2nd innings score in ODI World Cup history, Pakistan gave one of their worst batting performances.

Indian fans over the moon after brilliant bowling display

As Pakistan kept losing wicket after wicket, Nasser Hussein commented, “This is a collapse only Pakistan could manufacture.” It looks like fans from both sides agree with the comment, as fans from India and Pakistan made fun of the Pakistan team’s collapse.

The Indian fans were elated as Pakistan, despite having a great start, were dismissed for just 191 runs. On a pitch where the bowlers had 0 support, they picked up the last 8 wickets while only giving away 16 runs.

Pakistan fans on the other hand, were not happy with the performance. They said the mid-innings collapse after Babar Azam is dismissed happens too often and hope it is fixed soon. Others were not surprised, saying this was way too common to be shocked by.

India will need to chase down a measly score of 192 to win their 3rd match of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. In the 7 times the two teams have faced in the ODI World Cup, India has won all their meetings and it looks like they will win their 8th match as well.
