In an interview with Revsports, Gautam Gambhir talked about the 2011 World Cup and how many player’s contributions weren’t given enough credit. He recalled how good Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh were in the tournament.

He said “When you talk about not giving credit, forget about me. I think we haven’t given enough credit to Yuvraj Singh as well. We haven’t given enough. Tell me how many people talk about Zaheer Khan’s first spell in the World Cup final, which had set the tone for us. Five overs, four maidens, one for four, one for one.” He further said the media was individual based and created the narrative that a single person won the World Cup.

You forget about team and what the team members have done. No individual can ever go on to win the World Cup. That was the case. India would have won every World Cup till now because we worship our heroes or we worship our own players individually so much.” Gambhir said fans start talking about them and treat them beyond a game of cricket. Gautam Gambhir further said that his 97 in the finals wasn’t even the biggest contribution in the World Cup.

Gambhir said Yuvraj Singh had a major contribution to winning the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 World Cup as well. He said people don’t talk about his performances in the 2011 World Cup like his performance against Australia in the Quarter finals

Gambhir currently is a mentor for Lucknow Super Giants, but might leave next year because of the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. After 12 years, India will be hosting the ICC ODI World Cup once again. In 2011 India were the first hosts to win the World Cup and they will aim to win their 3rd title this year.
