After India’s mortifying 10-wicket defeat against England in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022, former India opener Gautam Gambhir lauded former skipper MS Dhoni‘s captaincy. Gambhir also took a dig at Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Speaking at Star Sports, Gambhir said: “Someone will come and probably score more double 100s than Virat Kohli, but I don’t think so any Indian captain would be able to achieve three ICC trophies.” Also, Gamphir wrote a cryptic tweet following India’s lackluster show.

Needless to say, Dhoni is India’s most successful skipper. Under him, the Men in Blue won the T20 World Cup in the inaugural season in 2007, ODI World Cup in 2011, and the Champions Trophy in 2013. Apart from the ICC trophies, he has also added four IPL trophies while captaining the Chennai Super Kings (2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021).

Meanwhile, India did superbly well in the Super 12s but couldn’t produce the battle in the semi-final against England. Virat Kohli remained consistent with his batting throughout the tournament, but except for him, other players simply faltered.

Hardik Pandya also stepped up in the semi-final, and his cameo helped India’s score to reach 168/6. But Indian bowlers couldn’t break the 170-run partnership between Jos Buttler and Alex Hales.

Buttler scored an unbeaten 80 runs from 49 balls (with nine fours and three sixes), while Hales smacked four boundaries and seven maximums to score an unbeaten 86 off 47 balls. The latter was adjudged the Player of the Match.

A huge occasion, really happy with the way I played. I think this is one of the best grounds to bat in in the world. Great value to hit your shots with the short square boundaries, and a ground I have good memories at. I never thought I’d play in a World Cup again, and to get a chance is a special feeling. It’s a country I love playing in. Jos was unbelievable out there,” Hales said at the post-match presentation.
