Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey’s dismissal of Jonny Bairstow received mixed reactions from the world. While the Aussies believed the attempt was within the rules of the game, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir did not think so.

The dismissal, however, has been labeled valid as per MCC laws since the ball was not considered out of play by both teams. Bairstow walked out of his crease with no intention of taking a run but since the ball was still in play by Australia, the run-out was a valid attempt at dismissing the batter.

While Alex Carey was lauded by many for his awareness on the field, the 2011 World Cup winner questioned Australia’s move and was unhappy with the dismissal. He took to Twitter to express his view and in a harsh outburst, referred to the Aussies as ‘Sledgers.’

By referring to the Australians as ‘sledgers,’ Gautam Gambhir asked whether the spirit of the game applied to them or if it was just for the Indian team. He did not think Australia’s tactic was within the spirit of the game and was an unacceptable move. The left-hander tweeted, “Hey sledgers….does spirit of the game logic apply to u or is it just for Indians?”

Bairstow’s wicket came at a crucial time when England were reeling at 193/6 where Stokes and Bairstow were the only recognized batting pair left for England. The wicket left everyone baffled and Australia were at the receiving end of a massive backlash. None of the Australian players showed any remorse and skipper Pat Cummins saw nothing wrong with the dismissal.
