Former India opener Gautam Gambhir slammed an online news portal for a fake quote on Virat Kohli and asked them to either cite the source or apologize. Gambhir and Kohli played together for the Indian team but also got involved in ugly altercations on and off the field twice. Gambhir usually does not mince his words while criticizing Kohli for his performance, which is why fake quotes started circulating on social media.
This happened after Glenn Maxwell slammed the first double century of this World Cup against Afghanistan to guide his team to a thrilling three-wicket victory. Social media was filled with tweets of all sorts and some users started circulating a quote that seemed to imply that Gambhir was taking a sly dig at Kohli.
Virat Kohli would have taken singles on 195 if had he been there. But Glenn Maxwell chose to hit six that’s what makes him different. The quote in the report published by News18 read.
What bullsh*t! When I say something I say it openly. To all the so-called verified handles - cite source or apologise!”Gambhir wrote on X.
Notably, social media fans are divided over Kohli trying to reach his century multiple times in the World Cup. While some fans believe the Delhi-born batter has the right to score his ton after guiding the team in a comfortable situation, others believe Kohli’s sole focus was his centuries.
Gautam Gambhir gave his verdict on Virat Kohli’s 49th ODI ton
India played slowly during their match against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. In that match, Kohli scored his 49th ODI ton and equaled the numbers with Sachin Tendulkar.
After the match, Gambhir, during an interview with Sportskeeda, said that though it was important for Kohli to bat deep, he slowed down in the last five to six overs, and then observed that Kohli did that to reach the three-figure mark. The BJP MP further said that Kohli’s slowing down could have hurt India if they were batting on a good pitch.
