‘It’s wrong’ – Gautam Gambhir slams Virat Kohli for influencing umpire’s decision against Bangladesh

Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has the nature of expressing his opinions out loud without any hesitation, even if it’s bold and unsuitable at times. Once again, he has made headlines and this time he slammed Virat Kohli for his attempt to influence the decision of the umpire.

In the 16th over between India and Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud bowled a bouncer which Kohli pulled towards long leg for a single. However, while running the run, he raised his hand towards the leg-umpire to express that the delivery was too high and it should be declared a no-ball.

The umpire was on the page as of Kohli as he declared it a no-ball. However, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan wasn’t impressed with the gesture as he came running in from extra cover before getting involved in an animated conversation with Kohli. However, there was nothing serious as both disengaged with smiles on their faces.

Later on, umpire Marais Erasmus clarified the reason behind his decision to Shakib and the play resumed. Gambhir, who was in the commentary box, didn’t stay behind from slamming Kohli for his attempt to intervene in the decision of the umpire and showing unnecessary aggression on the field.

He said the former Indian skipper was wrong there to ask for a no-ball from the umpire and even termed it against the spirit of the game: “It’s wrong for Virat Kohli to ask for a no-ball from the umpire, it’s against the spirit of the game,” Gautam Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Team India escaped an upset against Bangladesh as they managed to win a close battle by just 5 runs. Batting first, Indian batter Virat Kohli continued his golden touch with the bat as he shined once again at the showpiece event. He smashed an unbeaten 44-ball 64, including 8 fours and a six. It was his third fifty of the event in four games.

A fifty from KL Rahul and a quick cameo from Suryakumar Yadav boosted India’s total to 184 at the end of the first innings. In reply, Bangladesh got off to flying colors as opener Liton Das went all guns blazing. He smashed the Indian bowlers all around the park before the rain intervened.

Due to the loss in time, the match was reduced to 16 overs and a target of 151 was set for the Tigers. However, Liton was run out, courtesy of a direct hit from KL Rahul. After that Bangladesh kept losing wickets at regular intervals to fall short of runs. Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya picked up two wickets each.
