Former India opener Gautam Gambhir took an indirect dig at Virat Kohli after India lost the 2023 WTC Final to Australia on Sunday. As the Rohit Sharma-led team lost the match by 209 runs, Gambhir did a brutal analysis of Team India and the hero-worship culture in the country. The former India opener said that India won’t a win trophy until the nation becomes Team-obsessed.

Gambhir said that one of the major reasons for India not being able to lift an ICC trophy is because the Team revolves around a couple of individuals. Although he did not take names, Gambhir has stated the same thing in the past as well.

“We are not a team-obsessed nation, we are individual-obsessed. We consider individuals bigger than our team. In other countries like England, Australia, and New Zealand, the team remains the priority, not the individuals.

“All the stakeholders of Indian cricket- from broadcasters and media personnel- have become mere PR agencies. They will only show three faces throughout the day,” said Gambhir to News 18.

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) mentor who was involved in a heated altercation with Virat Kohli during IPL 2023, also shed light on his relationship with Kohli. Gambhir said that all those things stay on the field, he respects the players of it.

“My relationships with MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli are the same. If there is an argument between us, it stays only on the field, not off the field. There’s nothing personal. They want to win as much as I do,” said Gambhir.

Notably, time and again, Gambhir has highlighted that Cricket is a team game and teams win the tournaments, not one player. The former India opener still talks about how fans keep obsessing about MS Dhoni’s six that won the 2011 World Cup for India and not look at other players’ performances.
