It has been reported by Dainik Jagran that former KKR captain, Gautam Gambhir, might leave the coaching staff of the IPL franchise. Gautam Gambhir currently is a mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants, being appointed to the role when the team was created in 2022.
This news comes after Andy Flower was replaced by Justin Langer as the head coach of the team. Former Indian team selector, MSK Prasad, has also reportedly joined the coaching staff of LSG as an analyst. This could mean LSG is undergoing a change in their team management staff.
In the T20 years Gambhir was a mentor, Lucknow reached the playoffs in both years, but got knocked out in the Eliminator by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2022 and Mumbai Indians in 2023. One of the most memorable moments in Gambhir’s tenure in LSG was his brawl with Virat Kohli after they lost to RCB in the Ekana Stadium.
Could Gautam Gambhir go back to Kolkata Knight Riders?
After being released by Delhi Daredevils in 2011, Gautam Gambhir was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders for $2,400,000. He was appointed as the captain of the team and under his captaincy, he took KKR to the playoffs and qualified for the Champions League Twenty20.
The next year KKR won their first IPL title under Gambhir’s captaincy and won again in 2014. In 2014, he took KKR to the CLT20 finals as well, losing to the Chennai Super Kings by 8 wickets. He was released by KKR by mutual consent in 2018 and returned to Delhi Daredevils as he wanted to finish his IPL career where he started.
He is still an icon in Kolkata because of his contributions to the team, and it is rumoured that he could go back to his old team as a coach. Gambhir currently is playing in the Cricket Masters T10 being held in the USA. Gambhir is also a Member of the Lok Sabha, being the representative of East Delhi. He also runs his own NGO, called Gautam Gambhir foundation.
