For fans, hearing Gautam Gambhir utter anything against KL Rahul, is quite surprising. Both Rahul and Gambhir are part of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

But Gambhir preferred young Ishan Kishan over Rahul for the forthcoming ODI World Cup. The tournament will be played in India from October 5 to November 19.

Gambhir and Mohammad Kaif were involved in a heated discussion over who should be India’s main wicketkeeper for the ODI World Cup. And while Kaif believes India should go with Rahul because of his performance at the No.5 position, Gambhir thinks differently. He believes the management should always choose players in the playing XI based on their form and not how big the player is.

To win the World Cup, name is more important or form?” said Gambhir on Star Sports. “Had Kohli or Rohit made those four consecutive fifties, would you have said the same thing about KL Rahul? When you are preparing to win a World Cup, you don’t look at a name, you look at the form of a player that could win you the trophy.”

The reason why Gautam Gambhir chose Ishan Kishan over KL Rahul is only due to Kishan’s clutch knock against Pakistan on Saturday (September 2) at the Pallekele Stadium in Kandy Sri Lanka, in the 2023 Asia Cup. Kishan scored a valuable 82 runs off 81 balls at the No.5 position after Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi shattered the stumps of the top-order batters.

Kishan stitched a crucial 138-run knock with Hardik Pandya, who top-scored for India with his 87-run knock. India reached 266 only because of them and a cameo from Jasprit Bumrah. Pakistan could not walk to the field to chase the runs as the match was called off due to rain. India will play their second match against Nepal in Kandy on Monday (September 4).
