Gautam Gambhir joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019, contesting in the 2019 General Elections. He contested in the East Delhi constituency, winning by 695,109 votes. With the 2024 General Elections closing by, Gambhir has decided to back out and has conveyed the same on his X profile. 

He recently posted on X, asking BJP President J.P. Nadda to “relieve” him from his duties. Gambhir said he wanted to focus on his prior cricket commitments, referencing his job as the mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders

He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for the opportunity he was given to serve people. Gambhir had beaten Aam Aadmi Party’s Atishi Marlena and Congress’s Arvinder Singh Lovely for the post. Many reports have suggested that the BJP were not going to give the former KKR captain a ticket for the elections. 

Gautam Gambhir’s contributions as Member of Parliament 

In his term as the representative of East Delhi in the Lok Sabha, Gautam Gambhir has worked towards improving the lives of the citizens of his constituency. He worked in reducing the Ghazipur Landfill, a garbage disposal site which almost reached the height of the Qutub Minar.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he donated 2-years of his MP salary to get oxygen tanks. He also had his own foundation, which worked to help patients in the pandemic. He also installed three giant air purifiers to improve the air quality in the polluted air of Delhi. Gambhir also increased security measures in the city to make the city safer for women.
