“Facing him in the nets is a nightmare”- Glenn Phillips recalls experience with Umran Malik in SRH nets

Umran Malik and Glenn Phillips

Umran Malik started as a fast bowler who can clock 150 plus speed but finally, he showed his terrific performance against the Punjab Kings on Sunday, April 17 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

He registered the figures of an excellent 4/28 with a maiden over in the final over. In the final over itself, he plucked three wickets to restrict PBKS for 151; and was named the ‘Player of the Match’.

Glenn Phillips, Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman, explained how he had to protect himself with a chest guard to ensure security while facing the speedster Umran Malik. He also wondered what it feels like to face him in the match.

He said: “He’s absolutely rapid. Facing him in the nets is a nightmare. I’ve got my chest guard on to not get hurt. Imagine what those balls (in the game) will be feeling out there. When it comes to bowling first, we really have to keep hydrating as much as possible. The heat is really playing a big part. Hopefully, we keep them in check and he (Umran) keeps bowling at that pace,” said Phillips during the first innings of SRH vs PBKS.

He then said that placing two fielders in the third man region is a different option to counter the pace of Umran Malik.

“Yeah, I think Kane and Umran have probably talked to each other and understood that having a slip in place is a waste at this point when Umran is bowling at that sort of pace. Having two men as the third man isn’t a bad option. It’s also a different thing that batters aren’t used to seeing,” he added.

Umran Malik also became the fourth bowler to not concede a single run in the 20th over. Other bowlers are Irfan Pathan, Lasith Malinga, and Jaydev Unadkat.

“In Jammu, it usually gets to 47 or 48 degrees, so it doesn’t matter (the heat), it’s actually nice to play in this heat. I think I have got my line and length better over the last few days, the plan was to keep it full and straight, and in that channel just outside off,” said Umran during the innings break.
