The Mumbai Indians camp has been filled with negative reports before the start of the 2024 IPL season. It all stemmed ever since they removed Rohit Sharma from the post of captain and replaced him with Hardik Pandya.  

There have been rumors of a rift between Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya ever since the all-rounder returned to Mumbai Indians. Many reports suggest that he only agreed to return to Mumbai if he was made the captain of the side, which the owners and the team management agreed to.

Sharma also arrived at the MI camp late, taking a break after a long Test series with England. He finally joined the camp on 19th March and took part in a team training. During the training, Pandya walked up to his former MI captain and embraced him.

Mumbai Indians are hit with an injury crisis, losing Dilshan Madushanka and Jason Behrendorff as they injured themselves days before the start of the IPL. Even Suryakumar Yadav has not recovered from his surgery, with the NCA not giving him clearance for the IPL.

The team has decided to sign two replacements for their injured players. Behrendorff was replaced by English pacer, Luke Wood. Meanwhile, they signed 17-year-old Kwena Maphaka to replace Madushanka. Maphaka was the highest wicket taker during the recently concluded 2024 ICC U19 World Cup. He picked up 21 wickets in 6 innings, with an average of 9.71. 

Mumbai Indians face Gujarat Titans in their first match of the season. It will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium on 24th March. It will be Pandya’s first game against his former team and also Shubman Gill’s first match as GT captain.
