Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Lakshadweep islands to promote tourism on the Indian island, but days after his visit, comments from a few Maldivian ministers sparked massive controversy. These ministers made racist remarks, and several Indian celebrities condemned them and came out in support of India’s beach tourism.

As expected, many Indians have canceled their bookings in the island nation. Hardik Pandya joined the bandwagon, saying he would visit Lakshadweep for his next holiday.

Extremely sad to see what's being said about India. With its gorgeous marine life, and beautiful beaches, Lakshadweep is the perfect getaway spot and surely a must-visit for me for my next holiday #ExploreIncredibleIndia.

Former India cricketer Venkatesh Prasad criticized Mariyam Shinua due to her derogatory remarks. Shinua is the deputy minister at the Maldives Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information, and Art.

In one of her posts on X, she called PM Modi a “clown.” Because of her racist comments, the Maldives government suspended her along with other two ministers Malsha Shareef and Mahzoom Majid.

Former India all-rounder Suresh Raina wrote he found it disheartening to see such comments from Maldives ministers despite the fact that India contributes to their economy. He expressed his admiration for the island nation but asserted that it’s crucial to prioritize India’s self-respect.

Aakash Chopra said that ‘India Out’ was in Maldives’ government’s manifesto and the people voted for it. He concluded by saying that he and his family will choose wisely by visiting Indian islands for vacation.
