Harmanpreet Kaur played a captain’s knock against Australia in the semi-final clash on Thursday (February 23) at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town. The question of her availability was hanging in the air because on the eve of the semifinal match, she fell ill and was even hospitalized.

Despite that, she did not miss the all-important clash, even scoring a scintillating half-century, giving a hope that India will secure back-to-back final berth. But a run out by Ashleigh Gardner ended her knock to the disappointment of the team and the Indian cricket fraternity. She was extremely frustrated after seeing the result on the big screen, threw her bat and took a long walk back to the dressing room. On air, England’s cricketer-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain called that bizarre run a ‘schoolgirl error’.

During the post-match presentation, Harmanpreet responded to Hussain’s comment. “He [Nasser] said that? (Raises her eyebrows). Post-match? Okay. I don’t know, that’s his way of thinking but sometimes it happens. I have seen many times in cricket when batters are taking a single like that and the bat gets stuck there. Obviously, I will take it as we were unlucky today,” the Indian skipper said.

I think it was unlucky but I don’t think it was a mistake by a schoolgirl. We are mature enough, we are playing international cricket and whatever he said, that’s his way of thinking. I don’t think it was like that,” the 33-year-old added.

Owing to poor bowling and sloppy fielding, runs kept flowing from Australia’s side with dangerous players like Beth Mooney, skipper Meg Lanning, and Ashleigh Gardner feasting on the Indian bowlers. The defending champions reached a formidable total of 172/4, and restricted the opponents to 167/8 to win the match by five runs, and proceeded to yet another World Cup final.

While chasing, India, at one point, were tethering at 28/3, before skipper Harmapreet Kaur with Jemimah Rodrigues took the responsibilities on their shoulders. Slowly they kept the scoreboard running by hitting boundaries at regular intervals.

Rodrigues was dismissed by Darcie Brown in the 11th over, and a couple of overs later, Gardner’s throw to the keeper ended Harmanpreet’s knock. Other batters couldn’t do much as India suffered another heartbreak in a World Cup.
