“He can do so when he cuts off all ties with BCCI”- CSK can’t use MS Dhoni as mentor in SA T20 League
MS Dhoni
UAE and South Africa’s new T20 leagues will start from next year and no Indian cricket players, contracted and retired can take part in the league, even as mentors and coaches until he has cut off all ties with the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The retired players, who only plays in the Indian Premier League are also not allowed to play the outside league matches.
So if Chennai Super Kings, whose owners have a team in SA T20 League wants to have MS Dhoni as their mentor, they can’t do so because Dhoni still plays in the IPL. Notably, six teams in SA’s T20 League have been purchased by the owners of IPL. And five teams out of six teams in UAE’s ILT20 are owned by Indian teams, three out of which own IPL team too.
“It’s clear, no Indian player including domestic players can take part in any other league until he is retired from all forms of the game. If any player wants to take part in these upcoming leagues he can only do so when he cuts off all ties with the BCCI,” a BCCI official told The Indian Express.
“Then he can’t play IPL for CSK. He has to retire here first,” he said when he was asked if players like Dhoni can take part in the league as a mentor or coach.
BCCI wants to protect its players, says Sunil Gavaskar
Recently, former Australia captain Adam Gilchrist had questions about why Indian players are not allowed to take part in other league matches outside India.
“I’m not criticising the IPL, but why won’t Indian players come and play in the Big Bash League? I’ve never had an open and honest answer: Why are some leagues accessing every player is the world? No Indian player plays in any other T20 league,” he had said.
Sunil Gavaskar, who had served as the IPL president during its seventh edition in 2015, then replied him, without taking his name, that those who want to have Indian players in their leagues, they basically want more sponsorship and that they are concerned about their cricket. But BCCI wants to protect its players by ensuring that they stay fresh for their matches by stopping them to play overseas cricket.
