WATCH: “He does not need reassurance”- Rohit Sharma backs out-of-form Virat Kohli after Lord’s failure
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli
Former India captain Virat Kohli has been suffereing from a prolonged lean patch. He hasn’t scored huge runs in the international matches, and in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL), he got dismissed multiple times on ducks.
India locked-horns with England in the 2nd ODI match yesterday, July 14, at the historic Lord’s. Virat Kohli could score only 16 runs and gave his catch to English captain and wicketkeeper Jos Buttler off David Wiley’s delivery. India eneded up losing the match by 100 runs as they failed to reach the target of 246. Reece Topley was the star of the night as he scalped six wickets to bundle out India on 146.

“He only needs one or two good innings”- Rohit Sharma on Virat Kohli
During the press conference, India captain Rohit Sharma was asked yet again about Virat Kohli’s performance in the 2nd ODI, to which Rohit replied that Virat needs only one or two good innings to bounce back. He also agreeded that Virat is going through a rough patch.
“A lot is being talked about Virat Kohli. Why is he being discussed? I don’t understand. Anyway, carry on,” an irked Rohit said when a journalist started to ask about Virat Kohli. Rohit later answered his question.
“He [Kohli] has played so many matches. He is playing from so many years. He is such a great batsman, so he does not need reassurance.”
“I pointed this in my last press conference, too: form goes up and down, that is part and parcel of any cricketer’s career. So, a player like him, who has played for so many years, who has made so many runs, who has won so many matches, for him, he only needs one or two good innings (to bounce back). That is my thinking and I am sure all those who follow cricket will think similarly,” said Sharma.
“We do have chats about about this topic, but we should also understand and think when we talk about such things. We have seen performance of all players goes up and down, but the quality of the player never gets worse. That we all should keep in mind. That is very important. He has made so many runs, check his average, how many hundreds he has made, he has (vast) experience of doing that. There is a slump in every player’s life. Even in the personal life it comes,” said Sharma.
