Here’s why broadcasters are showing tree symbol instead of dot ball during CSK vs GT IPL 2023 game

Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami during CSK vs GT Qualifier 1

IPL 2023 Playoffs went underway with the Qualifier 1 match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. GT captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and decided to have a bowl first. As usual, Mohammed Shami bowled the first over while Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway faced the veteran pacer.

While everything seemed normal, users spotted a small change. Instead of dot balls, the graphics showed trees. This caused a stir among the fans as they were left wondering about the reason behind it. It was then revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has launched an initiative wherein they will plant 500 saplings for every dot ball bowled in the powerplay overs of IPL 2023 playoffs.

Along with the green trees in place of dots, broadcasters also showed the dot ball count every now and then. Fans lauded the Indian board for their initiative. A few also pulled out some funny memes.

Now coming to Chennai Super Kings’ innings in Qualifier 1, the four-time champions got off to a good start as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway added 87 runs for the first wicket. Gaikwad made full use of the reprieve he got when Darshan Nalkande bowled a no-ball and went on to score a 44-ball 60. However, Gaikwad and Shivam Dube (1 off 3) fell in quick succession.

Ajinkya Rahane (17 off 10) and Conway tried to put on a partnership but the former handed a straightforward catch to the backward point fielder. Conway too fell prey to Mohammed Shami. CSK could not recover from these blows and eventually finished with 172/7 in their 20 overs. Ravindra Jadeja (22 off 16) played some attacking shots to propel CSK over 150.
