T20 World Cup 2022: How can Pakistan now qualify for the semi-final?

How can Pakistan now qualify for the semi-final?

The group 2 match started on Sunday [October 23] when Pakistan faced a defeat by four wickets against India in their opening match. On Monday, two Group 2 matches were played; Bangladesh outclassed the Dutch team and now Shakib Al Hasan’s team top the Group 2 points table followed by India. South Africa locked horns with Zimbabwe, but rain abandoned the match with both teams getting one point each.

Because South Africa and Zimbabwe got one point, the semi-final scenario looks interesting for Group 2. For Pakistan to qualify in the semi-final, they’ll have to at least get eight points, while a superior run rate will give an advantage to the Babar Azam-led team.

Pakistan had their morale slapped by Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue in the opening match. But they have a chance to forget this match when they’ll play against Bangladesh, Netherlands, and Zimbabwe. Despite Bangladesh’s topping the points table, they’ve done not so well in their previous T20Is before the World Cup.

As Pakistan is a strong contender for the T20 World Cup 2022, they can easily win matches against Netherlands and Zimbabwe. However, after their defeat against India, Men in Green will also square off against another favorite, Temba Bavuma-led South Africa.

India have already gained two points when Rohit Sharma’s men defeated Pakistan. If India beat South Africa and wins all of their Group 2 matches, they’ll have 10 points; they will easily qualify for the semi-finals. But if India face defeat by South Africa, then they’ll have eight points which will also make them a contender for the semifinal but then the net-run rate will come into the picture.

Proteas have to win at least three matches to remain in the tournament. If the Proteas beat India and win their other matches, the former will gain nine points.

If Pakistan win all of their next matches, they’ll have eight points. Now Pakistan versus South Africa will be an interesting match to watch in Group 2. If Pakistan beat South Africa and win in their remaining matches, then they’ll qualify for the semi-final.
