IPL 2022 Playoffs: Possible Scenarios for MS Dhoni’s CSK to still make it to the top 4

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings have very bleak but possible chances of qualifying for the play-offs for this edition of the IPL. The Men in Yellow had a disappointing start to the campaign when they were led by Ravindra Jadeja, and have so far managed only 4 wins in 11 games. Hence, while the Super Kings are still mathematically in contention for a top 4 finish, they need certain results to go their way to achieve it.
Apart from Mumbai Indians, every other team is still in contention for the play-offs of this year’s IPL. Moreover, only LSG and Gujrat Titans are two teams poised for qualification and need just one win each. One of them will become the first team to qualify after they clash tonight at 7:30. As for the remaining teams, there is still nothing sure, while some are in comfortable positions, others still hang by the thread.
Possible scenarios that leads to MS Dhoni’s team finishing in the top 4

Apart from winning their remaining 3 fixtures (MI, GT and RR), here’s what other results CSK need their way to go to finish 4th or possible third in the league stages of IPL.
- PBKS win 2 of their next 3 matches (Beat RCB, beat DC but lose to SRH) to finish with 14 points but with a lesser NRR than CSK.
- KKR win one of their next 2 matches (Beat SRH but lose to LSG) to finish with 12 points.
- DC win one of their next 3 matches (Beat RR but lose to PBKS and MI) as they have a healthy NRR to finish with 12.
- SRH win only 1 of their remaining 3 matches (Beat KKR, lose to MI and lose PBKS) to finish with 12 points.
- RCB lose both their remaining 2 matches to finish with 14.
- RR lose all their remaining 3 matches to finish with 14.
If the above scenario were to come true, Chennai will have to have to win their remaining fixtures with high margins as there will be a 4-way tie at 14 points for the third and fourth spots.
Alternatively, if KKR, SRH and DC all finish with 14 points along with Chennai, the team with the best NRR takes the 4th place. However, if Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore both win even one of their remaining games, CSK and KKR will be disqualified. In any case, if CSK fails to beat Mumbai, their chances of qualification are over as soon as Thursday itself.
