“I am innocent”- Sandeep Lamichhane pleads innocence after rape charges; CAN suspends him, court issues arrest warrant

Nepal team captain Sandeep Lamichhane has been accused of raping a 17-year-old girl. Police investigation are underway and Kathmandu District Court issued an arrent warrant against him. Also, Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) suspended him from the team to facilitate the investigation.
A 17-year-old girl had lodged a complain on Lamichhani at the Police Circle Gaushala on Tuesday. Lamichhane allegedly took her to places in Bhaktapur and Kathmandu on August 21, a day before Nepal’s visit to Kenya, and raped her in a hotel in Kathmandu.
During a telephone conversation with the CAN officials, Lamichhane said he is innocent. He also said, he would return to Nepal after the league.
Lamichhane took to his social media accounts and explained that he is innocent.
“I am INNOCENT & keep complete belief in the respectable laws of Nepal. I have decided to take a leave from CPL and go back to my country within few days. I am ready to face all these baseless allegations. May justice be served to the innocent & right investigation to be done towards everyone involved. Hope the law acts equal to everyone,” Lamichhane wrote in the post.
Sandeep Lamichhane is the only Nepal to have played leagues all across the world
Lamichhane is currently in the West Indies, playing in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) representing Jamaica Tallawahs. However, so far, he didn’t feature in any of the three games that the team played so far. He will now be leaving the tournament. He made his debut in the Indian Premier League playing for the Delhi Capitals in 2018. He is only the one in Nepal to have played in T20 leagues around the world, including in Ausralia’s Big Bash League, the Lanka Premier League.
He made in international debut in May 2018. In 2021, he replaced Gyanendra Malla as Nepal’s captain and is also he second-fastest man to 50 ODI wickets.
