England’s marquee pacer in Tests, Stuart Broad has made a bold statement about Ashes 2021-22 which England lost 0-4. Broad has said that he does not count that edition of Ashes as real because of the restrictions in place at that time. Broad said that players did not play to their full potential and hence it did not feel like what an Ashes series should do.
Notably, Australia thrashed England when the Joe Root-led team toured Down Under in December 2021. The series started with a 9-wicket defeat for England. The Englishmen then lost two Tests on the trot by 275 runs and an inning and 14 runs. However, England saved themselves from some big embarrassment as they drew the fourth Test. But the hosts came back roaring in the fifth Test and won it by 146 runs to pile up on England’s misery.
Stuart Broad featured in three games for England wherein he took 13 wickets at an average of 26.31. But the English pacer has said that he does not count that as ‘real Ashes’.
“Nothing was harsher than the last Ashes series. But in my mind I don’t class that as a real Ashes. The definition of Ashes cricket is elite sport with lots of passion and players at the top of their game. Nothing about that series was high level performance because of the Covid restrictions. The training facilities, the travel, not being able to socialise. I’ve written it off as a void series,” said Broad to the Daily Mail.
This statement from the marquee pacer attracted quite a few reactions from the fans. Most of them heavily criticized Broad for demeaning Australia. A few also questioned the logic behind this statement.

Broad is excited about this edition though!
Stuart Broad, however, said that he is excited for this edition of the Ashes as ever. “I think I’m even more excited than in my first Ashes. In 2009 I was apprehensive and very nervous. It was all very tiring because I was into it so much but I’m chilled now. I love it. I’m addicted to it and I’m addicted to the way we’re playing,” said Broad.
