Pakistan’s legendary pacer Wasim Akram, who was famous for swinging the ball, stated that the social media generation in Pakistan still calls him a match-fixer. It is not the case so in countries like India, Australia, England, and the West Indies, where people refer to him as one of the best bowlers who played the sport.

The 56-year-old donned the green jersey in 1984 and played till 2003. In his illustrious career, Akram bagged 414 wickets in 104 Tests and 502 wickets in 356 ODIs; he also contributed 2898 runs in Tests, while in ODIs, he amassed 3717 runs.

He played a crucial role in Pakistan’s lifting of the World Cup for the first time in 1992. He led the Men in Green in the final of the 1999 ODI World Cup.

But he was accused of match-fixing a few times in his career. Ata-ur-Rehman alleged Akram of offering him Rs 3-4 lakh to fix a game in the 1990s, while there were rumors about his trying to fix the match between Pakistan and New Zealand in Christchurch. He was alleged of faking an injury in the 1996 World Cup quarter-final loss to India.

Recently, he opened up about the match-fixing allegations to Wide World of Sports. According to him, even if Pakistan’s social media generation still calls him a match-fixer, fans in India, Australia, England, and West Indies call him one of the best bowlers of all time.

In Australia, England, West Indies, and India, when they talk about the World XI, when they talk about the best bowler in the world, my name pops up but in Pakistan, this generation, this social media generation, they are the one who come down, every comment they send, they say, ‘oh, he is a match fixer’, not knowing what it was,” said Akram.

“I have passed that stage in my life where I have to worry about people,” he added. Watch the video below:
