The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, Chhattisgarh will host its first-ever international cricket match. India will be playing the second ODI against New Zealand on Saturday (January 21) at this venue.

This stadium is named after Veer Narayan Singh Binjhwar. He was a landlord from Sonakhan, who led the 1857’s first war of Indian independence in Chhattisgarh.

This stadium is also the third-largest cricket stadium in India and the fourth-largest in the world. The first-ever cricket match played here was in 2010, when the Canada national cricket team played a practice match against the Chhattisgarh state team.

Raipur stadium was established in 2008 and has a seating capacity of 65,000. Although it hasn’t hosted any international matches, a total of 26 T20 matches were played here in the past- Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in 2013, Champions League Twenty20 in 2014, IPL 2016, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2017-18. It also became the second home of the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2013.

The Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson, who is not part of the current squad, is the highest T20 run score in the Raipur stadium. He has accumulated 223 runs from five innings, including a ton and two fifties at a strike rate of 159.29 and an average of 55.75. While bowlers like Tim Southee and Trent Boult have good bowling figures at this venue. Both the bowlers are also not part of the Kiwi’s current ODI squad.

Only one time the 200-run mark was crossed here. And as for the highest run-chase, Mumbai Indians chased down a 162-run target to win the match by nine wickets against Southern Express in 2014 in a Champions League T20 match.

Fans in Raipur will be hoping for a nail-biting finish like the first ODI which was played on Wednesday, January 18. In the first ODI, despite India’s reaching a challenging total of 349/8 the Kiwis gave a tough fight by stretching it till the last over but failed to complete the left 12 runs.
