David Miller’s onslaught in the last overs ended India’s winning streak as Rohit Sharma’s Men in Blue faced a five-wicket defeat in their third match on Sunday [October 30] at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Miller’s and Aiden Markram’s half-century knock helped the Proteas chase down the 134-run target comfortably.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. India’s score read 49/5 around the 9th over and then entered Suryakumar Yadav. He showed his class in this terrible situation by playing a cautious knock; he went on to score 68 runs off 40 balls (with six boundaries and three maximums) to guide India to 133/9 in 20 overs.

During the Proteas’ batting, Arshdeep Singh gave the first breakthrough when he took the big wicket of Quinton de Kock in the second over. Rilee Rossouw might have scored a ton in the previous match, but he couldn’t face Arshdeep and departed for a duck in the 2nd over.

Mohammad Shami dismissed the third batter in the 6th over. He bowled a length ball, skipper Temba Bavuma shuffled and looked to clear the short fine leg but instead got an inside edge and keeper Dinesh Karthik took a low catch.

Aiden Markram played a careful inning and smashed his half-century off 38 balls. But a catch from Suryakumar Yadav ended his knock. He departed in the 16th over, bowled by Hardik Pandya.

It was short of a length ball in the middle. Markram pulled it but only got elevation; Surayakumar at the deep square leg didn’t miss it. Markram exited the field after a well 52-run knock off 41 balls with six boundaries and a maximum.

Ravichandran Ashwin bowled in the 18th over, and David Miller smashed him for two back-to-back sixes. However, Ashwin had the last laugh when he dismissed the other batter, Tristan Stubbs (six runs off six balls) on the fourth ball.

Miller becomes dangerous in the final overs, which is well known. He first completed his half-century off 40 balls, then went on to win the match for the Proteas.

In the last over, the Proteas needed six runs, and Rohit Sharma handed the ball to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The new batter Wayne Parnell was at the striker’ end and missed the first ball. Parnell then stole a single off the second ball, and gave the strike to Miller. Miller then smashed two back-to-back fours, which were also the winning runs.

India faced their first defeat in the T20 World Cup from Bavuma-led South Africa by five wickets. Arshdeep Singh scalped two wickets, and Mohammad Shami, Pandya, and Ashwin grabbed one wicket each.
