“India have come here to win the World Cup, we aren’t…”- Shakib Al Hasan and Co. eye a massive ‘upset’ for India
Shakib Al Hasan
Bangladeshi skipper Shakib Al Hasan made a controversial statement (on Tuesday) on the eve of the match against India. He declared that his team did not come to the T20 World Cup to win but to upset Rohit Sharma-led India and Babar Azam’s Men in Green.
Shakib stated that every game is crucial for his team, and they don’t focus on any single opposition. They are focused not on players’ strike rates but on giving a complete team performance in all the departments of the game.
“Every match is important for us and we want to play with the same approach. We don’t want to focus on any single opposition. We just want to stick to our plans. We are not worried about the strike rates of our players in this World Cup. We are just focused on giving a complete team performance in all the departments of the game,” Shakib told reporters in a press conference.
Shakib Al Hasan is confident that his team can beat India and Pakistan
Shakib Al Hasan then went on to give examples of Ireland and Zimbabwe’s victory against England and Pakistan and showed confidence that his team can beat strong teams like India and Pakistan.
“If we are able to win against India or Pakistan, it would be an upset. Both the teams are better than us on paper, if we play well and if it is our day, there is no reason why we cannot win. We have seen teams like Ireland and Zimbabwe beating England and Pakistan. If we are able to do the same, I’ll be happy,” he added.
The 35-year-old skipper further said that since India are the favorite, they have come to win the World Cup, but not his team. Their main motive will be to upset India, “They [India] have come here to win the World Cup, we are not here to win the World Cup. You can understand the situation, if we win against India, it will be an upset and we will try our best to upset India,” Shakib said.
India and Bangladesh have won four points from their three matches in Group 2. The winner of the clash will confirm their semi-final berth in the marquee event.
