India pips Australia to take No.1 spot in Test rankings ahead of World Test Championship Final

Team India pipped Australia to take up the No.1 spot in the Test rankings on Tuesday. The Rohit Sharma-led team ended Australia’s 15-month reign at the top as they are now the No.1 Test team in the world. India are at the top position with 121 rating points while Australia occupy the second spot with 116 rating points. England, South Africa, and New Zealand are the third fourth and fifth-ranked sides in Test cricket.

India leapfrogged Australia as the International Cricket Council (ICC) dropped the results from the 2019-20 season. The annual rankings consider all series completed since May 2020, with series completed before May 2022 weighted at 50 percent and all subsequent series weighted at 100 percent.

As a result, Australia’s home series wins over Pakistan (2-0) and New Zealand (3-0) in 2019/20 were no longer in consideration, while their 4-0 win over England in 2021/22 has its weighting halved. Consequently, Australia’s ratings dropped from 121 to 116. For India, their 2-0 defeat against New Zealand in 2019/20 was no longer in consideration for the rankings, thus giving them a two-point boost from 119 to 121.

With India occupying the top spot in Tests and the Rohit Sharma-led team already the No.1 in T20Is and No.3 in ODIs, fans started congratulating Rohit Sharma and Co.
