India Women start their Women’s Asia Cup 2022 in style; defeat Sri Lanka Women by 41 runs

India locked horns against Sri Lanka to open their campaign in the Women’s Asia Cup 2022. They defeated the Lankans by 41 runs on Saturday, October 1 at the Sylhet District Stadium.

Sri Lanka Women on the toss and opted to bowl first. India didn’t have a flying start as they lost the wickets of openers Shefali Verma and Smriti Mandhana on 10 and six respectively.

But No. 3 batter Jamimah Rodrigues steadied India’s innings with her knock of 76 runs off 53 balls that also included 11 fours and a six at a strike rate of 143.40. But in the 18th over, Chamari Athapaththu bowled her out.

Chamari tossed it up but helt it back a touch. Jemimah dances down the track and swung wildly across the line. It was a tired-looking shot and the ball staied low as well. Jemimah ended up missing the ball completely and the ball hit the middle stump.

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur scored 33 runs off 30 balls with two fours and a six. Oshadi Ranasinghe saw Kaur pre-meditating and held it back a touch. Kaur skipped down the track but the ball is pushed full and wide. Kaur ended up running past the ball and Anushka Sanjeewani behind the wickets whipped the bails off in a flash.

At the end, India could accumulate 150 runs by losing six wickets in their alloted 20 overs. Ranasinghe grabbed three wickets.

Sri Lanka responded by scoring only 109 runs in 18.2 overs and with this, India women started with a victory in the Women’s Asia Cup 2022. Hasini Perera scored the highest run for the Lankans with her 30 runs off 32 balls while opener Harshitha Madavi was run out by Mandhana. Dayalan Memalatha scalped three wickets for India Women.
