On Friday (October 6), the cricket fans of India and Pakistan were rooting for their respective teams in the semifinals held at the ZJUT Cricket Field in Hangzhou, China in the 2023 Asian Games. India easily hammered Bangladesh in the first semifinal but to the disappointment of the Pakistani supporters, Qasim Akram and company failed to defend a paltry target of 116 against Afghanistan in the second semifinal.

After winning the toss Afghanistan chose to bowl first. And though Pakistan got off to a decent start, they started to lose wickets regularly following the dismissal of opener Mirza Tahir Baig.

Half of Pakistani players headed back to the dugout for just 71 runs in 12 overs and before they could think of where they were going wrong, they got skittled out for 115 runs in 18 overs. The top scorer Omair Yousuf could contribute just 24 runs.

Fareed Ahmed scalped the most wickets for Afghanistan as he dismissed three batters for 15 runs in three overs. Qasim Akram and Zahir Khan picked up two wickets each. Captain Gulbadin Naib and Karim Janat bagged one wicket each.

Fans are perfectly aware of the rivalry between India and Pakistan in any sport. So, a section of fans got disappointed after Pakistan’s ouster from the Asian Games. But most of the Indian fans rejoiced to see them not winning gold or silver medals.

For Afghanistan, Noor Ali Zadran top scored with 39 runs off 33 balls. Gulbadin Naib scored an unbeaten 26 runs off 19 balls. These runs were enough to take Afghanistan past the target to secure themselves a place in the final. In the final on Saturday (October 7), Afghanistan will face India.
