“Our batters got Wellalaged”- Fans in awe as 20-year-old Dunith Wellalage breaks India’s back by picking up a fifer

Just over a year ago, Dunith Wellalage was captaining for Sri Lanka’s U-19 team in the ICC U-19 World Cup. He finished the tournament as the highest wicket taker with 17 wickets. He made his ODI debut just a few months after the World Cup and a year later he was selected for the 2023 Asia Cup.
In the 3 matches he played before facing India, he had picked up only 3 wickets. He was economical in all 3 of his innings. Then came his amazing spell against India. On his first ball, Wellalage bowled opener Shubman Gill. In the next over, he got Virat Kohli caught at mid-wickets, picking up his 2nd wicket.
In his next over, the 20-year-old bowled the captain, Rohit Sharma. Towards the end of his spell he caught and bowled KL Rahul. On the last ball of his quota, he got Hardik Pandya to edge the ball to the keeper. The umpire, Masudur Rahman, said Pandya was not out. After Sri Lanka Captain, Dasun Shanaka, agreed to review it, the ultra edge showed a clear edge. Wellalage got his half century.
