India’s squad for Asian Games: Ruturaj Gaikwad to lead India’s men’s contingent at 2022 Asian Games in China, Harmanpreet Kaur to lead women’s team

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday announced India’s squads for the 2022 Asian Games. While Ruturaj Gaikwad has been named as the captain of the men’s squad, Harmanpreet Kaur will lead the women’s team. Meanwhile, UP cricketer Rinku Sigh who missed making the cut for West Indies T20Is earned his maiden call-up.

Punjab’s wicketkeeper batter Prabhsimran Singh also got his maiden national call-up. The 22-year-old who played for Punjab Kings in IPL 2023 has been included in the 15-member squad along with his PBKS teammates Jitesh Sharma and Arshdeep Singh. Chennai Super Kings’ all-rounder Shivam Dube has also returned to the national side.

Meanwhile, Tilak Varma, Rahul Tripathi, Shivam Mavi, and Mukesh Kumar have also been included in the 15-man squad. Washington Sundar also makes a return to the white-ball squad after being out for months. Interestingly, senior batter Shikhar Dhawan who was touted to lead India missed out.

Standby list of players: Yash Thakur, Sai Kishore, Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Hooda, Sai Sudarsan.

Harmanpreet Kaur to lead India’s women’s squad at Asian Games, Richa Ghosh returns

BCCI also announced India’s women’s squad for the multi-sport event. Harmanpreet Kaur will be leading the 15-member squad. Richa Ghosh who was left out of the Bangladesh tour has returned to the national squad. Meanwhile, Shreyanka Patil who starred in the Emerging Women’s Asia Cup 2023, could not make the cut.

Standby list of players: Harleen Deol, Kashvee Gautam, Sneh Rana, Saika Ishaque, Pooja Vastrakar.

Notably, the 2022 Asian Games were postponed last year due to China’s zero-covid policy. So, they will be held this year from 19th September to 8th October 2023.
