“Introduction of Bonus points,” Aakash Chopra proposes two changes to current IPL format that will make league more interesting

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the world’s biggest T20 league and rightly so. Not just in terms of revenue generated but the popularity and the fierce competition among the participating teams makes IPL one of the best. A few tweaks in rules while keeping the ICC Rule Book in mind have also helped IPL achieve newer heights. For example, the new Impact Player rule.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took inspiration from the Big Bash League and introduced this new rule which has worked well so far. High-scoring games have become a norm with teams using this new rule to their advantage. However, it has not been easy for the fans to understand.

Meanwhile, former India cricketer turned commentator Aakash Chopra has proposed two radical changes to the current format of the tournament to make it even more interesting. Chopra has suggested introducing bonus points for wins with bigger margins. The former cricketer cited the complications around net run rate as the reason behind this proposal.

“Introduction of the Bonus Points for winning a game with a huge margin. NRR is absolute but over 14 games is a tough math to understand. Bonus point is a tangible reward for playing significantly better. And also, keeps the interest alive for longer,” tweeted the cricketer-turned-commentator. Notably, the Bonus Point rule has already been used in other T20 leagues such as the SA20.

Aakash Chopra suggested starting last-leg games simultaneously

With IPL 2023 league stage going right down the wire before the top four teams are decided, Chopra has suggested starting matches in the last leg of the tournament simultaneously. He said that this will cut the advantage to teams playing last.

“Provision of starting the games in the final leg at the same time. Today, LSG has the advantage of knowing the exact math to go over CSK on NRR…because CSK plays first. Same for tomorrow depending on today’s results,” Chopra added.
