IPL 2023 Orange Cap: 5 Players who can win Orange Cap this season
Apart from Dhawan, there are three more players who are in the race for the Orange Cap in IPL 2023.
The sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is well and truly underway with all ten teams playing four games at least. While Rajasthan Royals (RR) are leading the Points Table with three wins in four matches, Delhi Capitals (DC) are languishing at the bottom of it with five consecutive defeats in the same number of matches. Meanwhile, Shikhar Dhawan is leading the Orange Cap race in IPL 2023 with Yuzvendra Chahal leading the Purple Cap race.
Dhawan has amassed 233 runs in four innings at a staggering average of 116.50 and has maintained a strike rate of 146.54. Although the Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain missed out on his team’s match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Saturday, Dhawan will keep the Orange Cap with himself after the 21 matches this season.
However, Dhawan might lose it to Jos Buttler as the gap between the two players is not too much at the moment. But that does not mean Dhawan will be out of contention as the Punjab captain has shown immense consistency over the last few years. Apart from Dhawan, there are three more players who are in the race for the Orange Cap in IPL 2023. Let’s have a look at them.
Shikhar Dhawan
As already mentioned, Shikhar Dhawan is leading the run charts at the moment and considering his consistency, the southpaw might end up as the highest run-getter this season. Dhawan opens the innings for Punjab and mostly plays the anchor role. This way, he will end up with a 30+ score on most days, resulting in a pile of runs at the end of the season. Dhawan has scored close to or over 500 runs in the last seven seasons (2016-2022).
Virat Kohli
After a horrific outing last year, Virat Kohli has started IPL 2023 with a bang. The former RCB captain has scored three half-centuries in just four innings, the latest of which came against Delhi Capitals on Saturday. Kohli has 214 runs at an average of 71.33 and at a strike rate of 147.58. Ever since his come back at the Asia Cup 2022, Kohli has shown signs of his younger self when he used to dominate bowlers for fun. Although he might not have a season like 2016, Kohli is well and truly in the race for the Orange Cap this year.
Jos Buttler
Ever since joining Rajasthan Royals (RR), Jos Buttler has become a different player altogether. Along with ripping apart bowlers in the powerplay, Buttler maintains consistency in terms of scoring runs. The England wicketkeeper batter had a breakout season last year when he scored as many as 863 runs and won the Orange Cap. Buttler has carried his form to this edition as well. The RR opener has already amassed 204 runs in 4 matches at an average of 51 and a strike rate of 170. So, Buttler is expected to fight for that Orange Cap once again.

Shubman Gill
India’s rising star, Shubman Gill is surely one of the contenders for the Orange Cap in IPL 2023. Gill has had a fantastic start to 2023 as he has already scored a double century in ODI, a T20I century and a Test century too. The right-handed batter also started IPL 2023 in some style, smashing a half-century in the very first game of the season. While the Gujarat Titans batter did not have good outings in the next two games, Gill scored a match-winning half-century a couple of days back. He has scored 183 runs in 4 innings and is expected to pile up more runs.
Faf du Plessis
Last but not least, RCB captain Faf du Plessis will also be in contention for the Orange Cap. The South African cricketer has consistently scored runs in the IPL and he has started this season on a good note too. Du Plessis has scored 197 in four innings so far with the help of two half-centuries. As Faf opens the innings for RCB and has a knack of producing blazing knocks, he will surely finish among the top run-getters this season.
