When it comes to the Indian Premier League, they are always ready to try out new rules. It started in 2023, when they introduced the Impact Player rule, a new penalty for slow-over rates and the ability to review for wides and no-balls.

Now the IPL has come up with a change to ensure the third umpire can make accurate decisions in less time. They have come up with the “Smart Replay System,” which will be implemented in the 2024 IPL. This system will see two hawk-eye experts sit in the same room as a third umpire. The TV directors, who used to assist the third umpire earlier, will no longer be needed.

In the SRS, the umpires will use split screens, match footage with better frame rates and a process that would eliminate the use of a TV director. The hawk-eye experts will be showing the umpires footage which their cameras capture as well, which was not available to the TV director. The conversations between these experts and TV umpires will be aired as well. So far, 15 umpires have taken part in a workshop on 17th and 18th March to learn the new system.
