“It might be controversial…,” Simon Doull makes interesting comment after Shubman Gill’s 51-ball 94

Gujarat Titans’ Shubman Gill played a match-winning knock (94* off 51) against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Sunday. As GT were put into bat first by Krunal Pandya-led LSG, Wriddhiman Saha and Gill put on a show as the duo added 78 runs in the first six overs. The pair also put on a massive partnership (142 off 73) for the first wicket. Saha who scored a 43-ball 81 was the aggressor in the partnership while Gill played second fiddle.

However, after the wicketkeeper batter was dismissed, Gill took charge and found boundaries with ease. The young batter built on the start and stayed till the end. Gill finished six short of his maiden IPL ton. However, the 23-year-old did a decent job batting through the innings. But Simon Doull was not too convinced if Gill’s approach was the right one.

The former New Zealand cricketer said that Gill batting through the innings was not the best decision from the GT management. Doull said that as the batter looked tired at the fag end, he should have retired out and should have let Rahul Tewatia finish the innings.

The former cricketer turned commentator said that although his opinion might sound controversial to people, he wanted Gill not to play for a milestone (his maiden IPL century).

“Shubman was getting tired. He wasn’t able to hit the boundaries as much as he could. And it can happen. Listen…it might be controversial, but I am waiting for the day when a bloke gets 75 or 80 off 45 balls and is cooked after the afternoon heat which is 45 degrees and hence quite can’t get there so he says ‘Okay Tewatia, you are out there.’ Retire him out,” Doull said, talking to Cricbuzz.

“I am saying time and time again, milestones don’t matter in this game. I know people will still say hundred is a hundred. Yes it is, but it’s a hundred if you win. If you lose, it means jack. I feel were just quite there when a guy says that he is tired and is not able to hit the boundaries. And if you have ammunition in the bank then why not use it,” he added.
